Harvard College was founded in 1636 for non academic religious purposes to train preachers in the English colonies. Its medical school was founded in 1782 after the war of independence.
Yale University founded in 1701 is similar to Harvard, to train preachers.
Both were and are privately funded, not State owned. Its medical school was created during the late 1700s.
